Teacher Programs

THE FLORIDA CENTER FOR TEACHERS (FCT) designs humanities-based programs for Florida K-12 teachers. Content-rich seminars focus on Florida-specific topics or other humanities topics through a Florida perspective, frequently Florida history, heritage, and topics mandated, but not funded, by the state. FCT provides teachers an opportunity to explore Florida history, literature, government, and environment through the following programs:

FCT Programs

Summer Seminars
Summer seminars, led by university scholars, offer teachers from all grade levels and content areas an opportunity to immerse themselves in a fascinating topic of study. These week-long programs are held in St. Petersburg, and teachers attend from throughout the state at no cost to themselves. Seminars are aligned with the Sunshine State Standards, and teachers apply to their districts for in-service credit. Each seminar serves approximately 25 & 35 teachers.

Zora Neale Hurston NEH Workshops
Funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, these week-long workshops use Eatonville, as well as Winter Park, Maitland and Ft. Pierce, as points of reference to explore the impact of place in the life and work of Florida’s celebrated author Zora Neale Hurston. These workshops are open to K-12 educators from around the U.S.  Each workshop serves approximately 40 teachers.

District Programs
A collaboration between FCT, school districts, and local cultural institutions, these one-day workshops provide local teachers with a content-rich seminar targeted to one specific discipline area (social studies, literature, etc.) Districts recruit and register participants; the cultural institution provides the venue; and FCT creates the program. Programs serve up to 75 teachers from the local district.

Created as part of the NEH St. Augustine workshops, this website provides content and classroom materials pertaining to Florida's Spanish Colonial heritage. It includes materials on Native American life, early exploration, settlement, missions, Fort Mose, and much more. Everything on this site - artwork, readings, primary sources, etc. - may be reproduced freely for use in the schools.
