THE FLORIDA BOOK AWARDS

Meet 30 of Florida’s best writers in this issue of FORUM, which features recipients of this year’s Florida Book Awards. Read excerpts of their winning work, learn about their lives—and how they feel about writing and living in Florida.

Some highlights:

  • Novelist John Dufresne talks about writing in the voice of the neighborhood.

  • Rodney L. Hurst’s book recounts the painful civil rights struggle in 1960s Jacksonville.

  • “Chiquita,” a 26-inch-tall Cuban singer and dancer conquered U.S. hearts at the dawn of the 20th century.

  • James Swain’s thriller about the last wish of a convicted serial killer is based on an actual Florida case.

  • One of the stories in Jeff Klinkenberg’s new collection begins, “Don Goodman, who still loved alligators, once was right-handed.”

  • Novelist Patrick Kendrick conjured up what would have happened if famous American writer Ernest Hemingway had been suspected of murder when he lived in Key West.
